Adaptive teaching

Pupils needing extra support

Could be given the equipment (device, bar magnet, materials bag) as a prompt for writing their method.

Pupils working at greater depth

Could test a range of 1p and 2p coins to find out if all 1p and 2p coins are magnetic and suggest reasons for their findings (some coins contain magnetic metals and some do not – coins made at different dates have a different metal composition depending on the prices of the metals at the time they were made); could answer the question, ‘How is a magnetic material different from a magnet?’ once they have gathered all their data. (A magnetic material is not repelled by either pole of a magnet, whereas like poles of magnets repel.)
