Lesson 3: Scat singing

Pupils create a scat singing call (where musicians make up words and sounds to mimic the sounds of an instrument) and perform it to the class, who respond by repeating what they've heard

Learning objective

  • To be able to scat sing using the call and response format

National curriculum

‘Pupils should be taught to:

  • appreciate and understand a wide range of high-quality live and recorded music drawn
from different traditions and from great composers and musicians
  • play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices and playing musical
instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression’

Pupils needing extra support: Pair children strategically to ensure they work in supportive partnerships. They may find it easier to be the ‘caller’ in their pair, as this will allow them to repeat the same call rather than having to generate ideas on the spot. When responding to a call, remind them it is okay to improvise so that their response can be different each time.

Pupils working at greater depth: Should take turns being the caller and the responder in the paired task. In the wrapping up, they could be encouraged to keep the class in time with their calls using gestures.
