Lesson plan

1. Recap and recall

Divide the class into three groups and hand out the sticky notes to each group.

Assign each group a state of matter and instruct the children to write the state on their sticky note. Hand out the Knowledge organiser to pupils requiring support (see Adaptive teaching).

Explain they will represent their state of matter in a class model. They should stick their sticky note to their chest to show their state. Arrange the class so the gases, liquids and solids are grouped in different areas of the classroom.

Recap the changes of state by:

  • Asking the pupils who are gases to point to the state they will turn into if they are cooled down (liquid).

  • Asking the pupils who are liquids to point to the state they will turn into if they are warmed up (gases).

  • Asking the pupils who are solids to point to the state they will turn into if they are warmed up (liquids).

  • Asking the pupils who are liquids to point to the state they will turn into if they are cooled down (solids).
