Adaptive teaching

Pupils needing extra support:

  • Should use the Activity: Division and unity scale (support), which provides a pre-drawn scale labelled with strong unity, some unity, some division, strong division to help the children with the structure.
  • Should use the sentence starters shown on slide 3 of the Presentation: Division and unity in Ancient Greece when giving their final conclusions during the Main event.

Pupils working at greater depth:

  • Should compare pieces of evidence when justifying placement of the facts. For example: ‘Shared language is stronger evidence of unity than the Olympic Games because it affected everyone all the time.’
  • Should explain how geography contributed to both unity and division, showing a balanced conclusion. For example: ‘Mountains separated communities and led to independent city-states, but the sea allowed trade and communication, which helped spread shared culture.’
