Before starting this unit you might want to check children can recall:
The different elements of the enquiry cycle (question, observe, measure, record and present).
Various data collection methods can be used during fieldwork (e.g. collecting samples, questionnaires, interviews, tally charts, sketch maps, photographs, annotated sketches, sound recordings).
That is a region is the largest scale area that a country is divided into.
Any issues facing the locality or wider region.
Names of some regions in the UK (this can be supported using the following optional activity).
Display slide 1 of the Presentation: Regions and ask the children to work in pairs to label the UK regions on the map. The children should write down each label number and the region name they think it is pointing to on a mini whiteboard. Take feedback and reveal the answers using slide 2.
Alternatively, hand out the Activity: Regions of the UK, one per pupil, for the children to complete.
