French numbers, calendars and birthdays

Children learn French numbers 1-31, the days of the week, months of the year, dates and seasons through maths and songs and class surveys; they research of dates of French festivals and revise the unit by having a traditional French birthday celebration in the classroom.

Children learn the French for numbers 1-31 and use this vocabulary to complete mathematical calculations.

Lesson 2: Days of the week in French

Children learn the days of the week in French to the tune of ‘Camptown Races’ and the vocabulary for yesterday, tomorrow and today so they can describe their week and then make a lift-the-flap week planner, practising their French cursive handwriting.

Lesson 3: Months of the year in French

Learning the months of the year in French through song, using the internet to research in which months various French festivals fall.

Lesson 4: Seasons and dates in French

The children begin by learning the seasons in French and then, using their recently learnt vocabulary for the months of the year and numbers one to 31, pupils carry out a class survey to find out the dates of their peers' birthdays and translate written dates from English to French.

Lesson 5: Celebrating a French birthday

After receiving an invitation to a class birthday party, children learn about the similarities and differences between traditional birthday celebrations in France and England and conclude the topic by singing Joyeux Anniversaire (Happy Birthday) and eating le gâteau (cake)
