Lesson 3: RFID

This lesson covers the topic of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) and offers children the opportunity to recognise the uses of RFID, in which circumstances it might be used and to discuss how encoding keeps data safe.

Pupils should be taught to:

Pupils needing extra support: Should use a much shorter code, perhaps a three digit code, and work with a partner.

 

Pupils working at greater depth: Could extend their system to have a three or four stage encoding system by adding in two further columns which complete a new sum and then ‘undo’ it. They will need to think about which order the sums need to be completed in to ensure that they are successfully decoded.

Pupils could also try much longer numbers, e.g. 16 digit codes like on bank cards.

 

Extension Opportunity: Children could try to break each other’s codes – i.e. what did the child multiply or add to the code to create the transfer code?
