How instruments make sound

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. It is designed for pupils and explores how instruments from around the world make sound through vibrations – movements back and forth. The video highlights instruments with vibrating strings, such as the guitar from Spain, violin from Italy, and sitar from India, as well as those with vibrating skins, like bongos from Cuba and tambourines found worldwide.

It also introduces wind instruments, where air vibrates, such as the flute, didgeridoo from Australia, and Scottish bagpipes. Pupils learn how reeds vibrate in instruments like the clarinet and mouth harmonica. Finally, they discover how parts vibrate in maracas, xylophones, and bells.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, key stage 2, Year 4, Energy: Sound and vibrations, Lesson 1: Vibrations
