Lesson 3: Recognising other people’s emotions

Children learn how other people might show their feelings, that other people may feel differently from them, and how to show others that they care.

Learning objectives

  • To recognise how others show feelings and how to respond

Statutory guidance

  • Caring friendships: Pupils should understand the characteristics of friendships, including mutual respect, truthfulness, trustworthiness, loyalty, kindness, generosity, trust, sharing interests and experiences and support with problems and difficulties.

  • Respectful relationships: Pupils should know the practical steps they can take in a range of different contexts to improve or support respectful relationships.

Differentiation

Pupils needing extra support: Might need extra examples of each scenario. It may be useful to create a comic strip conversation about one of the scenarios to embed the idea that other people can think and feel differently from us  (see link: 'National Autistic Society - Social stories and comic strip conversations').

Pupils working at greater depth: Should suggest a range of different ways of responding to someone who seems upset, angry, worried.
