Seeing safely in the sun
This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. It is designed for pupils and explores the science and history behind sunglasses and how they protect our eyes. The video begins by looking at how early Arctic peoples crafted snow goggles from tusks and horns to block intense sunlight, and then explains how our bodies offer some natural eye protection through deep-set eyes, eyelashes, and pupil adjustment.
The narrative then moves into the science of light, explaining how sunglasses work by blocking excess visible light and harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Pupils learn about the dangers of UV radiation, how to identify sunglasses with proper UV protection, and how astronauts use special gold-coated visors to shield their eyes from extreme sunlight in space. The video reinforces the importance of using sunglasses not just for style, but for safety.
The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, Upper key stage 2, Year 6, Making connections: Are some sunglasses safer than others?, Lesson 1: Investigating sunglasses – Planning
