Blending Spanish vowel sounds

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Spanish scheme of work. It is designed for pupils and explores how vowel combinations in Spanish glide smoothly together to form blended sounds, called diphthongs. Unlike in English, where vowel sounds often change when paired, Spanish vowels mostly keep their original sound, even when joined with another. This lesson focuses on recognising and pronouncing these blended sounds by slowing them down and practising mouth movements.

The video shows examples such as ie, ue, and ai, explaining how each sound should be heard clearly and how to practise blending them. Pupils are encouraged to experiment with different combinations, notice vowel glides in Spanish phrases, and spot patterns in spelling and pronunciation. By taking their time and listening carefully, pupils can build confidence in reading and saying Spanish words with vowel blends, helping them become more fluent and accurate speakers.
