Helping pupils deal with perfection

This Art and Design scheme of work video introduces pupils to expressiveness, as an alternative to perfection, supporting their progression in drawing as they move through key stage two.

By now, children have practised important techniques—holding a pencil correctly, applying tone, understanding shape and form, and using lines effectively. This lesson builds on those skills, while challenging the idea that good art must be realistic.

The focus is on drawing as a form of expression. In the first lesson, pupils create large, gestural drawings inspired by movement. They’ll explore how to make fluid, energetic marks using a variety of chunky drawing tools, such as graphite sticks, thick charcoal, pastels or crayons. Working at a larger scale gives pupils the freedom to move and draw expressively.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 5 Drawing: Depth, emotion and movement unit and helps children embrace creative freedom while continuing to develop their technical drawing skills.
