Understanding the Spanish verbs "ser" and "estar"
This Spanish video supports teachers in leading a clear and practical lesson that introduces pupils to the two Spanish verbs that both mean “to be”: ser and estar. These verbs are not interchangeable and are used in different contexts depending on whether something is a permanent characteristic or a temporary state. In this lesson, pupils will begin to understand how to identify these irregular verbs in the present tense and explore which one is appropriate in common sentence structures.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Spanish scheme of work – vocabulary. It supports teachers in helping pupils build confidence using ser and estar by highlighting useful patterns and rules of thumb. With a focus on third person singular forms such as es and está, the lesson links back to earlier learning in Year 3 and 4 and helps pupils understand how to use the correct form when describing people, places, and conditions. This foundation will help children become more confident in making independent language choices in their Spanish writing and speaking.
