Introducing routers

This Computing scheme of work video introduces the role of a router within a computer network. It supports a practical unplugged lesson where pupils simulate a network setup, linking a router to multiple devices to understand how information flows.

The video explains that a router acts as the hub of a network. In homes, it’s often combined with a wireless access point to connect devices like laptops, tablets, and smartphones. In schools or businesses, routers typically link to a server, managing connections to the internet through both wired and wireless networks.

When a user types a website into a browser, the computer sends a request to the router. The router communicates with the wider internet to fetch the information, then sends it back—completing the round trip. The video also demonstrates that routers don’t just connect devices to the internet—they help them communicate with each other. For example, if a pupil sends a document to a printer, the router directs the message to the correct device.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 3 Computing systems and networks 1: Networks unit, and helps teachers confidently guide pupils in understanding the essential function routers play in modern digital communication.
