Saying and Asking the Months
This Kapow teacher video supports you in leading a Spanish lesson where pupils learn to identify, read, and write the months of the year. The lesson builds on prior phonics learning from Year 3 and prepares children to say dates confidently in the next session. Most of the month names are cognates, making them easy to recognise, so the focus of the lesson is on pronunciation. Pupils are encouraged to apply their phonics knowledge and say the words independently before listening to audio or teacher modelling. This helps them to recognise that Spanish is a phonetic language, where words are pronounced as they are written, even when they include diphthongs like ay.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Spanish scheme of work – vocabulary. It supports accurate pronunciation and builds confidence by highlighting patterns in vowel sounds and syllables. You’ll also model how to convert a statement into a question using rising intonation. Suggestions for hand gestures and exaggerated expression make this an engaging, active lesson, and reinforce pupils’ ability to distinguish between questions and statements. This foundational work on months and pronunciation prepares children for asking and answering questions about dates in the following lesson.
