Using a bilingual dictionary in Spanish lessons

This Spanish video supports teachers in delivering an engaging and essential lesson on how to use a bilingual dictionary. Pupils explore how to translate between Spanish and English, starting with nouns before progressing to adjectives and verbs. They learn that bilingual dictionaries are organised in two halves and provide translations rather than definitions. Through guided examples and shared modelling, children become aware of key features such as noun gender, word class, and the importance of choosing the right translation for context.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Spanish scheme of work – vocabulary. It equips teachers with practical advice on introducing this powerful language tool while helping pupils avoid common pitfalls, such as mistranslation or misidentification of word class. By developing their dictionary detective skills step by step, pupils gain confidence in using resources independently, supporting comprehension and creative sentence building. With regular use, the bilingual dictionary becomes a vital part of every language lesson.
