Adding variables

This Computing scheme of work video shows how to develop interactive Scratch programs by introducing variables for personalisation and scoring. It builds on pupils’ existing projects by guiding them through the creation and use of two key variables: one to store the user’s name and another to track the score.

The video demonstrates how to:

  • Create a name variable to store user input

  • Use the set variable block to assign the user’s answer to the variable

  • Replace answer blocks with the new name variable for consistent use across the code

  • Add a say block that includes the user’s name for a more personalised experience

Pupils are also guided in creating a second variable called score, setting its value to zero at the start of the game and increasing it by one each time the user gives a correct answer. This makes the game feel more interactive and encourages children to think logically about how to track progress in their programs.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 4 Programming 1: Further coding with Scratch. It helps teachers support pupils in developing more dynamic Scratch games by combining user input, conditional logic and variable tracking in a meaningful and engaging way.
