Identifying shapes within a face

In this Art and design scheme of work video, pupils explore how to identify simple shapes within a face. This builds their observation and drawing skills ready for a Paul Klee-inspired portrait.

The video begins by asking pupils to look at a face and consider what shapes they can see. Pupils identify circles, rectangles and triangles in features like the head, nose, eyes and mouth. They also discover organic shapes, which are made from wiggly or curved lines and are not regular. Pupils are shown how to combine shapes to build a face, thinking about how lines join together and how different parts can be represented in creative ways.

Before drawing, they practise tracing shapes with a finger over a photo to help them spot the details. Then, they sketch their own shapes. These drawings will be saved and used in the next lesson to create abstract portraits inspired by Paul Klee.
