Interpreting Shabbat through time

This Religion and worldviews video supports teachers in understanding how different Jewish people live their lives, with a focus on the Ten Commandments and broader Jewish law. It explores how many Jewish people believe God gave Moses the commandments, including the instruction to keep Shabbat holy. Teachers are introduced to the concept of the 613 mitzvot (commandments) and how rabbinical interpretation has shaped the way some Jewish communities restrict work during Shabbat, based on the malachot—tasks once used in temple construction and farming. Over time, these interpretations have been refined to include modern-day actions like using electricity or handling money.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Religion and worldviews scheme – rules. It helps teachers understand how beliefs can be interpreted differently across communities and time, and supports clear teaching around Jewish law and lived experience. The video prepares teachers to explain how some Jewish people adapt traditions in light of technological and cultural change, while others maintain traditional observance out of a desire to follow God’s commandments as closely as possible. It encourages respectful discussions around diversity within a single religious worldview.
