Introducing repetition and loops

This Computing scheme of work video introduces the concept of repetition and loops in coding, using Scratch. It supports the teaching of early programming skills by explaining how loops can be used to simplify and animate code.

The video explains that repetition is introduced in Year 3, when children begin using repeat and forever blocks to make a sprite perform actions over and over again. Whether it’s a dance move, a sound effect or a spinning animation, loops allow for repeated actions without needing to repeat the code manually.

Teachers are guided through the use of:

  • The repeat block, which tells the sprite to perform an action a set number of times

  • The forever block, which keeps the action going until the program is stopped

These blocks are found in the Control category in Scratch and help reduce code repetition while making animations smoother and games more dynamic.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s teacher programming resources. It supports teachers in helping pupils understand how loops bring code to life, allowing for creativity, efficiency and engaging digital projects.
