Representing tone through shading

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces the concept of tone, which is how light and dark areas are shown in drawing using shading.

The video breaks shading down into two key aspects: how to apply it and where to place light and dark tones. It introduces two pencil grips. The detail grip, often used for writing, is ideal for precise lines. The shading grip, using the side of the pencil, helps pupils achieve smoother, even tones. Since most children are more familiar with the detail grip, learning to adjust for the shading grip may take time and practice.

Four key shading rules are modelled: use the side of the pencil, shade in one direction, apply even pressure and leave no gaps. These steps help children build confidence and accuracy in their technique. The video also challenges the misconception that shading only means grey pencil tones. Instead, it explains that tone can be shown in any colour. The video includes other ways in which teachers can support children in practicing shading.

This video is one of Kapow Primary’s Art and design teacher videos. It helps teach the foundations of tone and shading in a clear way.
