Teaching safe peeling techniques

This Design and technology video introduces teachers to the progression of peeling skills in primary cooking lessons, equipping them with the knowledge to guide children through safe and effective techniques using age-appropriate tools. It covers early peeling by hand in Reception, introduces swivel peelers in Key Stage 1, and builds to independent peeling of varied fruits and vegetables in Key Stage 2. Teachers are shown how to model safe handling, promote independence, and explore creative culinary uses such as vegetable ribbons.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Design and technology – Teacher skills videos for Food and Nutrition. It simplifies food preparation techniques and tool use, helping teachers feel confident and prepared to support children in developing peeling skills across the lesson and unit below.
