How do websites work?

This Computing scheme of work video introduces how websites work and what happens when you type a web address into a browser. It supports learning from the Year 3 Computing systems and networks 1: Networks unit, helping pupils visualise the journey of information across the internet.

Through an unplugged activity, pupils will take on the roles of users, servers and the cloud. They’ll explore how a user request is sent from a device to a server—a special kind of computer that stores all the parts of a website, including images, text and code. The server sends this data back to the user’s device, where a browser assembles the information into the website they see.

The video also explains the concept of the cloud, showing how data is stored on servers around the world so it can be accessed from any internet-connected device. This helps pupils understand how we can access photos, files and information even if our own device is lost or broken. The video supports children in understanding the hidden systems behind everyday internet use.
