Understanding physical and human geography
In this Geography video, teachers are supported in introducing and reinforcing the distinction between physical and human features. These are core concepts that underpin geographical understanding across key stages.
The video models clear explanations of how physical features are natural landforms and elements that occur on Earth independently of human influence, such as rivers, mountains, vegetation, weather and seasons. Human features, by contrast, are created or modified by people, including roads, buildings, ports, dams and renewable energy structures. Teachers are guided in addressing common misconceptions, such as whether parks, reservoirs, farmland and gardens are natural. It also clarifies ambiguous cases like waterfalls and woodlands, which may vary depending on context.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography teacher videos, which support teachers in developing confidence and subject knowledge when helping children explore key geographical concepts.
