Exploring hot desert biomes

This Geography scheme of work video introduces pupils to the concept of a biome, with a particular focus on the physical characteristics of hot desert biomes. Teachers are supported in helping pupils identify where deserts are located globally and understand the factors that influence climate patterns in these regions.

Pupils will recap the location of deserts, focusing on those situated around the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, such as the Mojave Desert in North America and the Sahara Desert in Africa. A demonstration is included to explain why areas near the equator receive more concentrated sunlight, making them hotter than those closer to the poles. Pupils are introduced to plants and animals uniquely adapted to desert life, such as cacti, brittlebrush, burrowing owls, snakes, camels and coyotes. They also learn that not all deserts are hot—polar regions like Antarctica and the Arctic are considered cold deserts due to their dry conditions.
