Look, ask, explore: Fieldwork for young geographers
In this Geography video, teachers are supported in delivering effective and age-appropriate fieldwork experiences for younger children. The video outlines how young pupils can explore their environment through observation, questioning and data collection. It focuses on familiar settings, such as the school grounds and local area, emphasising the development of simple geographical enquiry skills.
The video guides teachers through practical strategies for fieldwork. Teachers learn how to use measuring tools and compasses, record observations with annotated drawings, gather opinions using smiley and sad face ratings and present findings in tally charts and pictograms. The video also explains how pupils begin to answer questions using their findings and how these skills will be extended in Key Stage 2. Safety considerations for outdoor learning are also highlighted.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography – Fieldwork resources, supporting teachers to plan, scaffold and deliver purposeful enquiry in the early years of geographical learning.
