Look, ask, explore: Fieldwork for young geographers
This Geography scheme of work video supports teachers in delivering effective and age-appropriate fieldwork experiences in Key Stage 1. It outlines how young pupils can begin to explore their environment through observation, questioning and data collection, building on their natural curiosity about the world around them. The video explains how early fieldwork focuses on familiar settings — such as the school grounds and local area — with a strong emphasis on developing simple geographical enquiry skills. Teachers are guided through practical strategies including: using measuring tools and compasses; recording observations through annotated drawings; gathering opinions with simple smiley/sad face ratings and presenting findings in tally charts and pictograms.
It also introduces how pupils begin to answer questions using their findings and how these skills will be extended and deepened as they move into Key Stage 2. The video highlights the importance of preparing for outdoor learning safely, with a reminder that a safety framework can be found in the lesson plan materials.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography – Fieldwork teacher videos, supporting teachers to plan, scaffold and deliver purposeful enquiry in the early years of geographical learning.
