Applying creativity and design

In this Art and Design scheme of work video, pupils will see how art and creativity can be used professionally, by seeing the links between their fabric patterns and real-world design.

The video shows how in the lesson, children will be introduced to the difference between handcrafted and machine-manufactured design. This opens up conversations about design-related careers and the many roles involved in bringing a product to life. To enrich the lesson, a local designer could be invited to share their work or a trip to a factory, mill or museum could be arranged.

Children look at how their design could be used. They will imagine their design on a larger scale by repeating their patterns. There’s also the option to introduce digital design. Pupils can explore how modern designers work by scanning or photographing tiles and repeating them using computer software. Children will then sketch product ideas for their fabric, either in their sketchbooks or using templates provided.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 4 Fabric of nature unit. It connects pupil’s classroom creativity and art to the wider world of design.
