Discovering life beneath the sea

This  Science scheme of work video introduces teachers to the world of marine biology, helping Key Stage 2 pupils understand what it means to be a scientist who studies the ocean and the incredible creatures that live beneath the waves. It explores the work of marine biologists – from observing plankton to studying whales – and shows how they protect the seas using tools like boats, aquariums, and underwater diving. The video also tells the story of Jeanne Villepreux Power, a pioneering 19th-century scientist who invented the aquarium to study sea life more closely.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Science Working scientifically resources. It brings science to life through storytelling, inspiring curiosity while teaching pupils how scientists observe, question, and innovate to learn more about the natural world.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of  Science, Mixed-age, Y1/2 (A): Making connections: Ocean protectors, Y1/2 (A): Lesson 5: Being a marine biologist
