Three-dimensional paintings

This Art and design scheme of work video supports pupils in using tints and shades of one colour to paint an object so it appears three-dimensional.

The video begins by exploring how shadows are formed when light is blocked, and how artists use colour changes to show where light falls on an object. Pupils will observe how the side furthest from the light appears darker, and how light affects the way we see colour.

To build this skill, children will paint an object using a grid template. Working within the squares helps them focus on making gradual colour changes. The aim is for every square to be a slightly different version of the chosen colour. They begin by sketching the object onto the grid, choosing a starting colour, and mixing enough of it to work with. The starting colour will be mixed with white and black to create lighter tints and darker shades. As they fill each square, pupils work from mid-tones outwards, gradually adjusting the colour to reflect where the light hits the object.
