Creating 3D relief sculptures

This Art and Design scheme of work video supports pupils in translating their personal memories into abstract 3D relief sculptures, using colour, shape and composition to express meaning.

Starting with a memory mind map, children choose shapes and colours to represent their experiences—literally or abstractly. They draw, cut and arrange these onto a flat surface to create a balanced and meaningful composition. Next, they bring their design into 3D, recreating it in cardboard as a relief sculpture—where materials are raised from a background. Inspired by the work of Louise Nevelson, pupils cut, fold and layer cardboard to construct shapes that capture mood and memory. They explore structure by manipulating the materials and learn that it’s okay to adjust their design as they work. Once complete, sculptures are painted either in a single colour like Nevelson’s signature style or in a colour chosen to reflect the memory.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 6 Sculpture and 3D: Making memories unit. It helps children express their identity and story through sculpture, using form, texture and colour to create something truly personal.
