Build your own working gears
This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Design and technology scheme of work. It is designed for pupils and gives step-by-step instructions on how to construct different types of paper gears using a variety of materials. Pupils begin by gluing templates onto card and roughly cutting out all the parts to distribute among their group. They learn to accurately cut two identical circles, make holes using a thumbtack and toothpick, and explore three gear-building methods: using paperclip teeth, modelling dough, and corrugated card. For each type, the video clearly demonstrates how to assemble the gear teeth evenly, secure the layers together, and allow time for drying with added weight.
The process continues with instructions on making handles using split pins and mounting the gears on a board. Pupils are shown how to ensure the gears mesh correctly by marking and aligning the positions before attaching. The video encourages testing the gears with either sticky tack for temporary handles or split pins for permanent fixtures. It also notes that different gear types may require different placements due to variations in teeth spacing.
The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Design and technology, Upper key stage 2, Year 5, Mechanical systems, Option 1: Gears and pulleys, Lesson 1: Gears
