How plants follow light
This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. It is designed for pupils and explores the concept of phototropism – how plants sense and grow towards light. The video explains how this adaptation helps plants survive by reaching sunlight to make food, and how phototropism can be passed down through generations, demonstrating evolution in action.
Pupils also learn how humans use this natural adaptation in farming through the example of forced rhubarb. The video shows how farmers take advantage of phototropism by growing rhubarb in dark sheds, encouraging tall, fast growth and producing sweeter, softer stems. This practical example links plant biology, adaptation, and farming in an engaging and accessible way.
The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, Mixed-age, Y5/6 (B): Making connections: How does light affect the direction of plant growth?, Y5/6 (B): Lesson 2: Investigating plant growth – Gathering data
