What do Buddhists believe?

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Religion and worldviews scheme of work. It introduces key beliefs in the Buddhist worldview and helps pupils understand how some Buddhists think about the mind, change, and meditation. It begins by exploring the origins of Buddhism, which started around 2,500 years ago with the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, known as the Buddha. His ideas spread from India and Nepal to countries like China, Thailand and Tibet, and today millions of people follow Buddhist worldviews in different ways.

The video explains that many Buddhists do not believe in a soul. Instead, they believe we are made up of changing thoughts, feelings and experiences – known as anatta, or anatman. A key part of Buddhist practice is meditation, which can involve breathing deeply, repeating sounds or focusing on thoughts, movements, or images. These practices help Buddhists train the mind, develop calmness and understanding, and try to live wisely and kindly.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Religion and worldviews, key stage 2, Year 3, *Updated* What makes us human? Lesson 5: What do some Buddhists do to focus on their inner self?
