How do files move through networks?
This Computing scheme of work video introduces the concept of files and how they travel through a network. It helps pupils visualise the invisible journey that files take from one device to another.
In this lesson, pupils learn that a file is like a digital box, holding useful content such as images, music or video. Using a relatable scenario—sending a photo of a funny puppy—this video guides pupils through each stage of the file’s journey.
Pupils discover how, once you press send, the file travels from your device to a wireless access point (like a bus stop), before heading to a network switch (a digital crossroads) and on to the server. The server checks the file and ensures it’s ready to be delivered. From there, the file takes the same path back—via the switch and access point—before arriving at its destination.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 3 Computing systems and networks 1: Networks unit. It shows that behind every shared photo or song is a clever network system working in seconds to keep devices connected. Pupils begin to recognise the parts of a network—like routers, servers and switches—and the important roles they play in everyday technology.
