How do files move through networks?

This Computing scheme of work video introduces pupils to the concept of files and how they travel through a network. It supports the children in visualising the invisible journey files take between devices.

In this lesson, pupils learn that a file is like a digital box, holding content such as images, music or video. Using a relatable scenario (sending a photo of a puppy) they explore how the file travels from a device to a wireless access point, then a network switch, and on to a server. The server checks it before sending it along the same route to its destination.

Children begin to recognise parts of a network, like routers, servers and switches, and the roles they play in everyday technology.
