Music: Key skills and knowledge by unit
Please note this document was recently updated to reflect changes to our long-term plan. See the Music: Long-term plan to find out more about these changes.
Aimed at the class or music teacher, this document shows the skills covered in each unit from the Music scheme of work for EYFS to Year 6 and provides knowledge statements for each unit.
It is invaluable if you wish to adapt our scheme of work to suit your school without adversely affecting progression.
The ✦ symbol shows the units that form our Condensed long-term plan. Almost all of the same skills that occur in our full curriculum are covered and those which are not are identified in this document.
To see an overview of progression throughout the school, see our Music: Progression of skills and knowledge.
Knowledge organiser: Computing – Y6 Online safety
A Knowledge Organiser that captures the essential knowledge and skills learnt throughout the unit Computing, Year 6, Online Safety.
This unit is designed to support pupils as they reflect on their digital footprint and learn how to protect their online reputation. It introduces key vocabulary such as digital footprint, digital personality, online reputation, sharing online, and selfie, encouraging pupils to think critically before posting content. The organiser presents questions to consider before sharing, such as “Who do I want to see this?” and “Am I sharing something I know is true?”. It also provides strategies for reducing online risks—like using avatars, managing privacy settings, and reporting harmful content—while reminding pupils to talk to a trusted adult if something online causes concern.
Music: Vocabulary progression
A vocabulary progression list detailing the terminology covered across the Kapow Primary Music curriculum. Words in bold show new vocabulary that has been introduced.
Knowledge organiser: RSE & PSHE – Y6 Safety and the changing body
A Knowledge Organiser that captures the essential knowledge and skills learnt throughout the unit RSE & PSHE, Year 6, Safety and the Changing Body.
This resource is designed to support pupils as they develop an informed understanding of puberty, reproduction, and online safety. It introduces accurate scientific vocabulary including fertilisation, sperm duct, ejaculation, ovaries, uterus, conception, and sexual intercourse, giving pupils clarity about physical development and human reproduction. Pupils also explore digital safety through key concepts such as cyberbullying, internet trolling, and the THINK framework—True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, Kind—for online behaviour. Guidance on seeking support from trusted adults, Childline, or emergency services helps equip pupils to make safe, respectful, and responsible choices.
Transitioning to Kapow Primary Computing
Planning for each year group to support staff and pupils to smoothly transition to our Computing scheme. All year groups have two catch up units (except for year two, which has one unit) to build a solid foundation of essential knowledge and skills before proceeding to our intended units and lessons for the year group.
Each of the catch-up units consists of selected lessons taken from a range of units in the previous year groups. This will support both staff and pupils in feeling confident and comfortable when approaching more advanced lessons.
You may find our Required hardware and software list for Computing particularly useful when planning, refer to this document for a comprehensive list of applications and software packages that are used across our Computing scheme of work.
Knowledge organiser: DT – Y6 Digital world: Navigating the world unit
A Knowledge Organiser that captures the essential knowledge and skills learnt throughout the unit Design and Technology, Year 6, Digital World – Navigating the World.
This resource is designed to support pupils as they explore how smart products can combine multiple technologies to support navigation and sustainability. Pupils investigate components such as GPS trackers, compasses, and pedometers, learning how one multifunctional digital product could replace many separate items. The unit introduces key vocabulary including Boolean, smart, biodegradable, product lifecycle, and sustainable, alongside an introduction to 3D printing and sustainable materials like cork and bamboo. It provides a foundation for understanding how technology can improve our lives while considering environmental impact.
D&T: Progression of skills and knowledge — condensed
This document is to be used by schools following the D&T: Long-term plan — condensed. It gives an overview of how skills and knowledge develop through our scheme of work for Design and technology.
Please note that the D&T: Long-term plan — condensed does not cover all the skills and knowledge covered in our full scheme of work. It does, however, ensure that children are given opportunities to work towards all of the attainment targets set out in the national curriculum.
If you are following our standard D&T: Long-term plan, then please see our Design and technology: Progression of skills and knowledge.
