Recap and recall

As this is the first Mechanisms unit in Key stage 1, there is no knowledge to recap with the children. In EYFS (Reception), the children may have learnt to: Use scissors to cut out. Use glue to stick. Use both scissors and glue safely.

Adaptive teaching

Pupils needing support

Could use the Activity: Sorting mechanisms: support version to sort fewer mechanisms during the Main event; could use the Knowledge organiser to help with the correct vocabulary when describing the movement of the sliders during the Main event and the Wrapping up.

Pupils working at greater depth

Should use left and right to describe movement as well as side to side; should begin to group other types of mechanisms, such as those that spin or pivot around a fixed point.
