Adapting Lessons 4 and 5 the Giant Spider model from the unit Year 2 Sculpture and collage to create human figures. However, the lessons can easily be adapted to the theme of any animal or creature simply by folding the rolls of paper in different ways.

Resources

You will need:

  • Approximately five sheets of newspaper per pupil
  • Masking tape per small group of children
  • Scissors
  • Wallpaper paste
  • Brushes
  • Paints

  1. Take several sheets of newspaper (we’ve used five) and begin rolling them to create the body.

2. Once you’ve rolled them, squash them together.

3. Use masking tape to secure them.

4. Make sure that they are securely taped.

5. Then fold the newspaper in two.

6. Stick more masking tape around where the neck and waist will be. Leave the the bottom two ends open, as these will form the legs.

7. Bend the legs to make knees.

8. Scrunch up some more newspaper and wrap it around the head and body. Secure in place with masking tape.

9. To create the arms, roll a few more sheets of newspaper into a thin strip. Secure them with masking tape again.

10. Lay it underneath the body and fix in place with masking tape.

11. Cover the figure with tissue paper and secure it using wallpaper paste. Leave to dry for two days.

12. Paint the figure with poster paints. We’re creating a football player, but you could create any person or famous figure.
