Lesson plan
Allocate the cardinal compass points to each side of the classroom and explain the children which is:
le nord - the north
l'est - the east
le sud - the south
l'ouest - the west
Begin by calling out a weather phrase, for example, dans le nord, il fait froid - in the north it is cold.
The children move to the north side of the classroom and perform the mime for il fait froid - it is cold. Ask the children to repeat the phrase, dans le nord, il fait froid.
Repeat the exercise and then invite different children to come up with phrases to give the instruction to the class.
These are example phrases you could use:
dans l’est, il fait beau - in the east, it is nice.
dans le sud, il pleut. - in the south, it is raining.
il fait chaud, dans l'est - it is hot in the east.
il y a du soleil, dans l’ouest - it is sunny in the west.
dans le nord, il y a des nuages - in the north, it is cloudy.
il neige dans l'est - it is snowing in the east.
il fait mauvais dans l'ouest - it is bad weather in the west.
