Before starting this unit, you might want to check that the children can recall:

  • A good composition arranges the foreground, middle ground and background to create balance.

  • Lines and marks show movement or emotion, with bold lines adding energy and soft marks creating calmness.

  • Tone adds depth by using light and dark areas to make images look three-dimensional.

  • A good composition balances shapes, colours and space to highlight key parts of the artwork.

  • Proportion creates realism by keeping the sizes of objects accurate and balanced.

  • Shading techniques add tone, texture and dimension to make drawings more lifelike.

  • Observation skills improve accuracy and realism by capturing small details in drawings.
