Lesson plan

Recap and recall

Explain to the children that they will be thinking about algorithms. Remind them that an algorithm is a set of commands that make a computer or robot do a job. Show slide 1 of the Presentation: Pirate puzzle and read the question aloud. Allow time for paired discussion.

Adaptive teaching

Pupils needing support:

  • Should use Resource: Arrow cards (support) to act out movements before programming to check the sequence.
  • Could solve the first set of coding puzzles alongside an adult so they are prompted to check their algorithm step-by-step.
  • Could test one block of code at a time to help identify where a bug has occurred.
  • Could use the Resource: Algorithm bugs (support) to support identifying and fixing errors during debugging.

Pupils working at greater depth:

  • Should create efficient algorithms by using the fewest possible commands and explaining why their solution is effective.
  • Should apply a systematic debugging method (for example, testing step by step or predicting errors) and explain how this helps fix bugs.
