Recap and recall

Ask the children to find something in the room that is a primary colour. Take feedback and name the primary colours together: red, yellow and blue. Show the Presentation: Primary and secondary colours. Ask the children what colour is made when red + yellow are mixed together.

Adaptive teaching

  • Could have the Activity: Colour wheel labelled in advance to identify warm and cool colours by matching colours to clearly marked sections.
  • Could use discussion prompts or the Knowledge organiser to describe how colours affect mood by referring to simple feeling words.

Pupils working at greater depth:

  • Should analyse how warm and cool colours guide attention and create mood in an artwork.
  • Should compare different areas of an artwork to explain how changes in colour temperature alter the overall effect.
  • Could compare two artworks to discuss how contrasting colour choices affect mood.
