Lesson plan
This exercise is to remind the children about cognates and how to say 'to live' in French, which the children learned in Year 3 (French, Year 3, A circle of life in French, Lesson 2: French habitats).
Organise the children into pairs and ask them to discuss what a cognate is and to come up with four examples.
After a few minutes take feedback from various children.
A cognate is a word that is the same or almost the same in French and English. Examples might include:
bleu - blue
le triangle - the triangle
le cercle - the circle
six - six
la forêt - the forest
la jungle - the jungle
un éléphant - the elephant
habiter - to live/inhabit
Ask the children to think of as many words in English as they can that sound as if they are connected to the French word, habiter - to live. Examples could include:
inhabit
habitat
inhabitant
habitation
