Before starting this unit you might want to check children can recall:
The names and types of houses in English, such as a detached or semi-detached house, and a flat.
The names of rooms in different houses in English.
Ask the children to work in pairs with the child next to them and think of four language detective clues they could use to help them understand unfamiliar words.
The following is a list of things the children might come up with:
Cognates and near cognates - words that are the same or very similar in French and English.
Words that look very similar to words already learned.
Context.
Text layout.
Clues that words are verbs or adjectives.
Take feedback and list the suggested language detective clues on the board.
