Lesson plan

1. Recap and recall

Invite each group to select one of the materials from the selection provided (tin foil, paper, bubble wrap, wood, glass, rubber gloves, wool gloves, leather gloves, medical gloves, gardening gloves and oven gloves – see Teacher knowledge).

Open an online timer and inform the groups that they have one minute to list as many properties of their material as possible on their whiteboards. Start the timer and ask the children to stop writing when the timer finishes. Take feedback from the class about the properties of their materials.

Invite one member from each group to come to the front of the classroom with their material. Ask them to arrange themselves into three groups: rough, smooth and in-between. Encourage the rest of the class to help direct them into the correct groups:

  • Rough: bubble wrap and gardening gloves.
  • Smooth: tin foil, paper, medical gloves, glass, leather gloves and medical gloves.
  • In-between: oven gloves, rubber gloves, wool gloves and wood (note that depending on the type of wood, it could fit in any of the categories).

Ask the groups to discuss the following questions and take feedback:
