Lesson plan
Before starting this unit, check that the children can recall:
Scratch is a block programming language.
A loop is a coding tool used to repeat an instruction in a program.
An algorithm is a series of instructions put in an exact order.
Decomposition means breaking a problem into manageable chunks.
Hand out the devices (one between two), the whiteboards and pens. Ask the children to open Scratch using the link: Scratch. Alternatively, they can use the Scratch offline editor (see Cautions).
Explain that they will explore Scratch, which they used in Year 3, to remind themselves of its features. Encourage them to try out different blocks, move sprites and see what they can make happen. Ask them to write or draw on their whiteboard if they discover something interesting.
Allow time for the children to explore. Set an online timer for no more than six minutes.
Take feedback on what they discovered while tinkering and any features they remember using in Year 3.
