Before starting this unit, you might want to check the children can recall:
Artists use colour to create an atmosphere or to represent feelings in an artwork (e.g. by using warm or cool colours).
Shapes can be used to place the key elements in a composition.
Artists can use lines to control what the viewer looks at within a composition (e.g. diagonal lines to draw your eye into the centre of a drawing).
Artists are influenced by what is happening around them (e.g. culture, politics or technology).
How an artwork is interpreted will depend on the life experiences of the person looking at it.

In this unit
Susan is an educator, artist and an active advocate and well-known champion of art craft and design education. Her roles include: Secretary to the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Art, Craft, Design Education, Past President, and now Honorary Fellow of the National Society for Education in Art & Design (NSEAD), World Councillor (representing Europe) for the International Society of Education through Art (InSEA), and an Associate of the Big Draw. When Susan isn’t sharing her passion for the arts, she loves photography, making her own art, absorbing culture and travel.
