Lesson plan

1. Recap and recall

Before starting this unit, check that the children can recall:

  • People are unique because of the differences between them.

  • That it is unfair to make assumptions about others based on how they look.

  • That the definition of prejudice is making unfair assumptions about someone based on certain information.

  • That the definition of discrimination is treating someone differently or unfairly because of certain characteristics, such as age, gender or religion.

  • Stereotypes can lead to the unfair treatment of different groups of people (discrimination).

  • That protected characteristics are certain characteristics (e.g. age, race, religion, sex) that are protected by law, so it is illegal to discriminate someone based on any protected characteristics.

  • What respectful behaviour looks like.
