Teaching healthy eating with sensitivity and confidence
This RSE & PSHE video supports teaching about food and diet in a positive, inclusive and evidence-based way. It explains how learning about nutrition helps children make informed choices, understand healthy eating and develop a positive relationship with food, while meeting the requirements of statutory Health Education.
The video outlines how learning develops across primary school, from identifying food groups and healthy habits in Key stage 1 to understanding balanced diets, food labels and calories in Key stage 2. It provides practical guidance for exploring nutritional information and comparing foods, while emphasising the importance of discussing food sensitively. Teachers are encouraged to avoid labelling foods as ‘good’ or ‘bad’, focus on health and wellbeing rather than appearance and recognise that children may have different experiences, preferences and access to food. Throughout, the video promotes an inclusive approach that supports healthy relationships with food and positive attitudes towards eating.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore growth and change and help develop personal, social and emotional skills, as well as an understanding of relationships and health education.
