Looking at the work of Magdalene Odundo

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces pupils to the idea that designers, makers and artists often begin with sketching and experimenting before creating in three dimensions.

In this lesson, pupils will explore how drawing can be free, expressive and full of movement, like the work of celebrated artist Magdalene Odundo, whose flowing clay and glass forms begin with simple, bold drawings. The video shows how Magdalena uses curves, ellipses and soft shapes to bring her designs to life. Pupils are encouraged to step away from small, neat sketching and instead go big.

The class will look at images of Magdalena’s work, then use their whole bodies to draw on the ground or walls, making sweeping marks with large, confident movements. They’ll experiment with line, tone and shape, using at least two chalk colours.
