Understanding Hindu sacred texts

This Religion and worldviews video introduces teachers to the sacred texts within the Hindu worldview, supporting lessons that explore how scripture can be expressed, remembered and interpreted. It explains how Hindu texts are classified into two main types: shruti, meaning ‘that which is heard’ and believed to be divine revelation, and smriti, ‘that which is remembered’, containing well-known stories and guidance for living. Teachers are introduced to important examples such as the Vedas, Upanishads, Mahabharata, Bhagavad Gita and Ramayana.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Religion and worldviews scheme – scripture. It equips teachers with clear, accessible knowledge about the variety and purpose of Hindu scripture, preparing them to explore key concepts like Brahman, devotion and duty in a respectful and age-appropriate way. It also supports confident teaching about the diversity within the Hindu tradition and how different texts are valued and used.
